António Costa is President of the European Council, a role he has held since 2024. As President he works closely with EU leaders to define the Union’s political priorities, foster unity and steer collective action on global challenges, including geopolitical uncertainty and the transformation of Europe’s social and economic model. His appointment followed a long political career spanning three decades. He has held senior government positions in his home countryof Portugal, including Minister of Justice and Minister of State, and served as Prime Minister from 2015 to 2024. A former Mayor of Lisbon and secretary-general of the Portuguese Socialist Party, he has also been vice-president of the European Parliament and a member of the Committee of the Regions. A lawyer by training, he holds degrees from the University of Lisbon and Lisbon Catholic University.
