Eduardo Santana Castellón was born in Cuba, grew up in Puerto Rico, and has lived four decades in Mexico. He is founding Director of the Museum of Environmental Sciences of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), which has the mission of “understanding the city and inspiring the conservation of nature that sustains it, and catalyzing ecological and social transformations for the benefit of our community”. Although the Museum is not yet opened to the public, it has received the Paris DNA Design Award, ADC Design Award, Better Future Design Award, and Global Future Design Award. He is Emeritus Professor at the UdeG, and Coordinator of the Socio-environmental Film Festival and the City & Nature Literature Award. For over two decades, he has been adjunct associate professor, visiting professor and honorary scholar at the Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies and the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology of University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he obtained BSc, MSc and PhD degrees. He has conducted research, conservation and teaching activities in Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, and the USA. He has collaborated in the defense of sacred sites and natural resources of Nahuatl and Wixárika indigenous communities in Western Mexico. As consultant for the World Wildlife Fund, he designed the Cuba Country Conservation Program and advised on other projects in Latin America. He has been elected to the governing boards of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Society for Conservation Biology, Association of Tropical Biology, and Aldo Leopold Foundation, and to the Benemérita Sociedad de Geografía y Estadística de Jalisco. He has played leading roles in creating some 20 new academic and conservation programs or institutions, including the Western Jalisco Regional Center of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development (UN University). He has been guest lecturer in over 130 universities, museums, research institutes, and environmental agencies and organizations in over 18 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean. He has produced over 130 technical and general public publications in journals, books, magazines and newspapers. He has been a director, advisor or evaluator of 57 undergraduate and postgraduate theses. He has received, individually or institutionally over 50 awards, medals or distinctions from community, state, national and international organizations, including the Ecological Merit Award – Jalisco State Congress, Miguel A. del Toro Medal – CIPAMEX, and the Leadership and Stewardship Awards from Partners in Flight.
