Independent event: New European Bauhaus Talk: Vision for sustainable, beautiful and inclusive suburban neighborhoods

The New European Bauhaus is an initiative by the European Commission which aims at creating sustainable, aesthetic and inclusive living spaces. In this event, we will discover how cities’ suburban areas can be regenerated based on these values.

The City of Turku has decided at the City Council level to create a Suburban vision and is now exploring how to integrate the values of the New European Bauhaus to boost the development. Around two thirds of Turku’s residents live in the suburbs, mainly in apartment building dominated areas. Turku wants to be a pioneer in equal urban development and a suburban policy. The development of suburbs must be based on the inhabitants’ needs and special characteristics of each district. At the same time, the city plans to be climate-positive in 2029, which requires joint efforts e.g. through sustainable renovation, nature-based solutions, and promotion of resource-wise lifestyle.

What kind of neighbourhood would you like to live in? What does the future of the suburbs look like? How to create sustainable, beautiful and inhabitant-oriented neighbourhoods? How can the New European Bauhaus support this development? How are other European cities working with the suburban development and the Bauhaus initiative?
