Can we make our towns and villages more sustainable and inclusive? Can we turn them into places people love and do so by learning from how others did it?

Dr. Sandra O'Connell is the Director of Architecture and Communications at the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland.

She says towns and villages across Ireland have been integral to Irish economic and cultural life for centuries. They can also be great places to live and work for modern lifestyles. To support those involved in Irish towns and villages, the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) has launched a free online resource, the RIAI Town and Village Toolkit.

The toolkit provides practical advice, references, and successful case studies of places that have positively overcome challenges with the help of architectural and urban design expertise.

The case studies focus on different towns & aspects:

  • Clonakilty - connectivity, accessibility & movement
  • Cloughjordan - environmental sustainability
  • Westport - health, wellbeing & happiness
  • Tubbercurry - variety & viability
  • Waterford's Viking Triangle - sense of place, urban form & character

Sandra feels that this publication will resonate with communities living in towns across Europe and is happy to share it with us!

The Town and Village Toolkit is available for free download from the RIAI website. If you are interested, head over to their website at www.riai.ie to know more what they do and search for the keyword "toolkit".

What do you think? Go to "Co-design" in our main menu and tell us how we can make our communities & the places where we live more beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive.
