An award-winning self-sustaining centre designed to inspire, inform and create impact and behavioural change for all who visit.

That’s the purpose behind the Rediscovery Centre. A reconditioned building from the shell of the old Ballymun boiler house located in Dublin.

The Rediscovery Centre is the National Centre for the circular economy in Ireland. It is also a creative movement to connect people, ideas and resources to support greener low-carbon living. ?⛏

The project was one of the many submissions for the New European Bauhaus award under the "Buildings renovated in a spirit of circularity" category.

The building's operations are designed and mapped to environmentally friendly practice. Green materials were used throughout the centre's construction.

Key features:
☀ Passive design optimising orientation for solar gain
? Hempcrete and salvaged sheep's wool insulation used in walls
☔Rain water harvested from the roof for use in toilets, internal and external green walls
?Liquid and solid waste from toilets is treated onsite
? All food waste goes to an in-vessel composter and is later used in the gardens on the campus

The objective of the centre was to create a 3D textbook experiential learning space.

To reflect the organisation's ethos, all project stages were completed sustainably, with the circular economy at the core. The 3D textbook provides a testbed space for new environmental technologies developed by research groups, local start-ups and entrepreneurs to showcase potential, educate and influence the behaviour of visitors at a local, regional, national and European level.

The centre is a hub for the community bringing together young and old alike and educating all on sustainable practice through different events. Its amenities are ideal for seminars, workshops, gatherings, team-building activities and exhibitions that demand a one-of-a-kind location and emphasise sustainability.

The eco-facility supports 4 social enterprises dedicated to championing upcycling, reuse and repair in paint, bikes, textiles and furniture, demonstrating effective resource efficiency, reuse and low carbon living.
