Move it!

Did you know that cars take approximately 70% of Brussels' public space? ?

A new project wants to transform the streets of the ?? capital from car-centric to ecosystem-oriented.

"Move it!" is the outcome of a cooperation between Superworld, an architecture and design agency, and Kameo, a start-up that provides bike solutions in Belgian cities. Their proposal is part of the hundreds of applications submitted to the New European Bauhaus rising star prizes in the "Reinvented places to meet and share" category. It has also been submitted to the Municipality of Brussels.

The project is about democratising public space and designing a better built environment that is inviting everyone to be a part of it.

Their idea is to recover public space, change mobility patterns, and reintroduce vegetation into the city. ?

The initiative proposes combining centralized planning with parametric geo-localized analysis and inviting citizens to shape public spaces starting at their doorstep.

Instead of designing a set of modules that would perfectly fit a car spot, the design of Move it! is split into sub-parts that can be freely combined. Simple forms & lines which are not entangled to a specific style in time or space. The public space becomes a mix of architectural elements, standing in space, representing the diversity of the people living around them and the multiplicity of their needs. For each location, the floor becomes a canvas that is entirely free for expression for each community.

The amount of on-street car parking is being reduced by providing bike parking, pumps and small repair points, as well as trees & urban furniture.

As a result, citizens are empowered, cars leave room for life & green mobility is encouraged.

The bottom-up approach is all-inclusive and values community intelligence.

"Move it!" want citizens to become co-curators of the streets, providing them with the tools to act and mediate the future of collective spaces. Citizens achieve this by using a map as a reactionary common ground. ?
