Veronica Manfredi is Director for Zero Pollution, Water Resilience and Green Urban Transition in the European Commission’s Directorate General for Environment, a position she has held since 2018. She leads the EU’s work to reduce pollution, strengthen water management and support the green transition in cities, shaping policies that improve air and water quality, limit industrial emissions and respond to climate, biodiversity and circular economy challenges. Her directorate oversees EU legislation on clean and well managed water, environmental noise, clean air and industrial accident prevention. It also guides the implementation of the Green City Accord and works closely with initiatives such as the Smart and Climate Neutral Cities Mission and the Covenant of Mayors to advance the EU’s climate ambitions at local level. Internationally, her team steers the EU’s participation in major environmental negotiations, including the UN Minamata Convention on Mercury and the UN Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution, and supports the Regional Sea Conventions and the international commissions for the Rhine and Danube rivers. A lawyer by training, she studied international and EU law in Rome, Turin, Kiel, Bruges and Brussels.
