Ursula von der Leyen is President of the European Commission, a role she has held since 2019. As President, she sets the political direction of the Commission and leads its work on the Union’s key priorities, including the digital and green transitions and the EU’s response to major global challenges. Her appointment followed a long career in public service in Germany and at European level. She has held several senior ministerial positions, including Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs and Federal Minister of Defence. She studied economics and medicine in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, and holds a medical degree from Hanover Medical School in Germany.
