dr. eng. arch. Jerzy Łątka is an architect, designer and researcher at the Faculty of Architecture Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
In his designs and research Jerzy deals with paper as a building material in innovative structures as well as t temporary, emergency and social oriented architecture. He gained professional and scientific experiences in international architectural practices and universities. He worked in Poland, Ireland, Romania, Great Brittan, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany. In 2013 as a student of Shigeru Ban at Kyoto University of Art and Design he took part in the design and realization of the emergency Paper Nursery School in Yaan, China. In 2016 Jerzy obtained first prize in the FutuWro, City of the Future/Laboratory of Wroclaw competition within the European Capital of Culture program for the House of Cards an experimental emergency house made out of paper elements. In 2017 Jerzy was selected as one of the 10 top innovators under 35 from Poland by MIT Technology Review and as one of the 30 Creative Citizens of Wroclaw, Poland. In the same year Jerzy defended PhD thesis entitled: “Paper in architecture. Research by design, engineering and prototyping” and was awarded with the title of Doctor at TU Delft, the Netherlands. In 2018 was nominated for Pole of the year in the Netherlands. In 2019 Jerzy was nominated architectural magazine Architektura Murator for a plebiscite for the most influential architects of the last quarter of a century in Poland. Between March 2019 and February 2020 he was as a post-doc at TU Darmstadt cooperating with BAMP (Bauen mit Papier) research group. In May 2021 Jerzy won the contest for scientific communicators FameLab Poland. Since March 2021 he is a head of interdisciplinary research grant at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology TECH (Transportable Ecological Cardboard House). In 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Jerzy engaged in the emergency shelters for refugees, which were realized in cooperation with Shigeru Ban Architects and Voluntary Architects Network.
