Henna Virkkunen is Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy and European Commissioner for Digital and Frontier Technologies. She was a Member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2024, following seven years in the Finnish Parliament, where her roles included Minister of Education, Minister of Public Administration and Local Government, and Minister of Transport and Local Government. Her role at the Commission includes combatting the increasingly complex security threats facing the EU, whilst strengthening the EU's external borders and internal security, at the same time as strengthening freedoms, justice and democracy. Her dossiers in the Commission also include making online more secure by leading work to tackle challenges with e-commerce platforms, helping combat unethical techniques online and contributing to the EU-wide enquiry on the impact of social media and the action plan against cyber bullying. She also oversees EU work on a new Digital Networks Act, boosting Artificial Intelligence innovation, developing an EU Cloud and AI Development Act and a single EU-wide cloud policy, and developing a long-term EU Quantum Chips plan.
